Timeline to Date From humble Beginnings
2004 - business founder Gary McDonough established Hobby Centre, a traditional radio control store.
2010 - Quadcopter (drones) started becoming popular and after 30 years of flying and building RC aircraft, the business was building many types of drones.
2013 - The decision was taken to start building an entry level fishing drone to compete against the traditional freshwater bait boat. This was called the African Quadcopter.
2014 - Soon customers were asking for a drone to use for saltwater fishing and that is when the Cuta-Copter was born. Cuta-Copter is a hybrid name from “Barracouta and Quadcopter”.
2015 - Improvements in the construction and the use of a shoebox vacuum form design's was used. The Cuta-Copter Revo MK1 started selling.
2016 - Due to certain parts being discontinued, we had to re-design the drone and so we came up with the Revo 2 in 2016.
2017 - The Revo 2 was the first attempt at waterproofing a drone, but this proved exceedingly difficult, so it was dropped that in favour of a new design the REVO 3.
The Revo3 went on to become a best seller and from this point the fishing market in South Africa exploded.
There were new entrants and even imitators of the ideas.
2018 - To improve things further, we designed the big lifter the REVO 4 and the smaller more efficient Matrix.
These 2 drones became top sellers and even out stripped the Revo 3 sales.
2019 - At the end of 2019, our customers were asking for water proofing again and to include a camera.
So the EX-1 was designed.
In 2019 CutaCopter took on a small reseller in the form of SA Secure in KZN to cover the Durban area,
who was recognised to share the passion and understand client needs in Durban which grew from strength to strength,
developing from just a reseller to repairer, and then an authorized CutaCopter Repairer to an Authorized Manufacture of the EX-1 Drone in just 12 months.
2020 - During 2020 the Covid situation caused havoc with suppliers and parts availability and business operations were significantly affected.
Fortunately, the storm was weathered and the famous PixHawk Flight Controllers was introduced into all our products.
Using Pixhawk auto-pilots has proven to be the best decision for flight safety, user features, drone stability and client confidence.
It did not take long for other Fishing Drone manufactures to migrate to the PixHawk system after the success of the EX-1 with PixHawk.
We will continue to evolve our designs to suit customers word-wide. During 2020 we expanded our international network to Australia, New Zealand, Greece,
and the US with new countries joining in 2021.
2021 - The Trident Range Begins
Professionally hand-crafted in South Africa by a dedicated, committed and outstanding team.
Platform reliability and stability is paramount, and this has been achieved by using advanced hardware and software. To suite this new fresh product the Cuta-Copter Trident 5000 the logo was also refreshed.
As a small business it has been a challenge to meet world and local demand, however the company continues to expand to meet the needs of anglers the world over.
End of an Era
Late 2021 after COVID and the shortage of micro chips worldwide Hobbycentre closed its doors for the last time,
however our timeline does not end there. To ensure continued support to customers our number one asset,
SA Secure took over the reigns of Cuta-Copter in December 2021. Thank you Gary McDonogh for your support and most of all your trust in handing over the baton to SA Secure, to carry your Legacy forward.
2022 - To Suite the industry SA Secure changed Call Sign to UNMANNED SA fitting with the primary business of UAVs and Drones.
With it became the sole Supplier, Repairer, Service Centre and Manufacture of the CutaCopter Fishing Drone.
Having the specific technical abilities and the relevent experience Unmanned SA quickly branched out into varous other UAVs and Drones to suite and accommodate the move in the industry. 2022 was an exiting year for us as with negotitions with suppliers across the world we now are the primary agents for the world renown CUAV flight controllers and all other related CUAV products in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Included into the package is the all heavy lifter the AgriCopter for Agricultural use. With the world going into Drones for every type of activity conceivable, Surveillance Drones evolved and Unmanned SA were there to accomodate our customer requirements and needs with the GA-07 and GA-16 with hightly intelligent and state of the art Ground Control Stations (GCS).
Towards the end of 2022 we edited the name Cuta-Copter to CutaCopter without the hyphen.
2023 - DAFFE (Department of Forestry Fisheries and Enviroment) declared Fishing with a Drone illegal in South Africa-obviously we contested this on behalf of ourselves and our South African customers, Unfortunatly we were declined at the Hight Court, but we marched on and percevied to appeal at the Supreme Court.
2024 - CutaCopter together with other brands in South Africa lost the case, with South Africa our large customer fishing drone base out we needed to persue our interests elsewhere to survive, we then concentrated efforts in Australia, New Zealand and the US, however not forgetting our loyal customers in South Africa that use there drones for purposes other than Fishing, Thank you for keeping our Flag Flying High.
